Breadfarm
Creating goodness by committing to quality, community, people, and tradition. Voted 100 best bakeries in America by Food and Wine.
Cairnspring Mills
In 2016 a group of Skagit Valley farmers, economic development leaders, and bakers, including our founder and CEO Kevin Morse, started Cairnspring Mills in Burlington, WA. The team founded Cairnspring Mills as an answer to the following challenges:

1. How to ensure local farmers remain financially viable as they face the growing pressures of urbanization and are increasingly forced into the race toward-the-bottom commodity system.

2. How to preserve the unique agricultural heritage of the Skagit Valley and build markets for the amazing grain produced in the valley and the Pacific Northwest.

3. How to shorten the distance between farmer and customer, not just for items we might see at a farmers market, but even for a bulk crop such as wheat.

4. While achieving all of this, how to also build soil health and conserve farmland.

A flour mill was the logical choice, taking advantage of the local tradition to grow wheat in a crop rotation scheme to rebuild soil health and to break disease cycles. In just a few years, we’ve been thrilled to see how our commitment to a shorter supply chain and taking care of the soil has resulted in a superior product. Alongside our customers, farmers, and the baking community, we look forward to rediscovering the unique flavors our varietals can produce.

Mossy Gate Flower Farm
I moved to Skagit in 2012 and fell in love with the agriculture and community. In 2015 I found myself going through a divorce with two little boys under the age of 4 wondering what I was going to do to support us. I stumbled upon flower farming and fell in love! I worked on a handful of area farms and had the privilege to stay with one for 5 seasons learning all I could. My passion is wholesale and with my amazing opportunity to become The Puget Sound Food Hub’s first cut flower farmer- we’ve been building a grocery program and offering fresh cuts to some amazing restaurants. Local wedding designers love buying local blooms for their freshness and quality and together we’re creating an impactful image of sustainability.

NW Fruit aka Western Washington Fruit Research Foundation
Dr. Robert (Bob) Norton began the outstanding fruit varietal research for our region at Mount Vernon more than 50 years ago. In those early years fruit growers from all over the broad region west of the Cascades, were cooperating with Dr. Norton and his crew in sharing the work with the public.

When Dr Norton retired in 1991 WSU Several cooperators decided to form a research foundation to raise money so WSU could continue the fruit varietal trials and so we could have some say about the projects. We formed this organization because we thought it the best way to promote and continue this work as a public service.

In 1996 WSU began working with the Skagit County Master Gardeners Program and the Native Plant Society, along with WWFRF, on the concept for a Discovery Garden. Local landscape architect and Permaculture designer, the late Kristan Johnson, was hired to design the 6 acre harmonious layout for a stately fruit tree demonstration garden and went on to design the balanced, connected Discovery Garden for the Master Gardener program and the Native Plant Society, on WSU property at the Mount Vernon station. Our Fruit Garden is The is dedicated to educating the public about fruit varieties that do well in Western Washington and showing various methods of culture. The garden has outstanding examples of pruning, such as the extensive espalier. It also has various types of rootstocks, pruning methods, and methods of protection from birds. It is maintained entirely by volunteers from our membership.

Skagit Valley Farmers Market
Owners Toni and John Christianson believe in salvaging materials and preserving history in any way they can. When the opportunity came to purchase the property north of the Nursery, they knew preserving the history of pea vining in Skagit Valley would be important. The Vinery, located on land that was historically used for growing peas, now acts as a location to host farmers markets and special events. Green peas used to be a dominant crop in the county, covering 32,300 acres and accounting for about a quarter of what was produced throughout the country. Most materials were salvaged from a historic barn torn down on Fir Island. After two years of hosting farmers markets, we can say that for many locals, our Sunday markets have become a Sunday tradition.

Skagit's Own Fish Market
The story started when Tana Skaugrud and husband Eric began fishing off the Washington coast in 1988. Unexpectedly, one of their neighbors noticed the crab pots in their yard and asked to buy some of their catch. Their fish soon gained a reputation in the neighborhood, and so they opened up a successful stand at the county farmers’ market. Those small beginnings developed into what’s now Skagit’s Own Fish Market, a locally-renowned store offering the very finest of Pacific seafood and other home-grown produce. For Tana and Eric, fishing is a way of life that’s been in the family for over 50 years and three generations. Eric started his fishing career in the Bering Sea longlining for halibut & black cod. To be closer to his family, he left the Bering Sea to fish off the coast of Washington for Dungeness Crab and to help with the fish market here in the Skagit Valley. Members of their family still go out to sea in all weathers to fish for salmon, and Tana is always invited on board to take first pick of the catch for the store. TANA & ERIC KNOW FIRST-HAND THAT FISHING IS HARD WORK, BUT THEY’LL TELL YOU THAT NOTHING BEATS THE EXHILARATION AND ADVENTURE OF BEING AT SEA… … the magnificent Washington coastline, the sightings of porpoises and killer whales, and above all the pride in bringing home a superb fresh catch. Skagit’s Own Fish Market offers the kind of high-quality seafood, coupled with personal and knowledgeable service that chain stores can’t even hope to equal. Staff are always on hand to advise on all aspects of the seafood, including provenance, nutrition, and recipe suggestions. Come to Skagit’s Own Fish Market, where you’re assured of a warm welcome, and where you’re guaranteed to see the very best of local produce on offer
